United Illuminating (UI) is one of two utility companies in the state of Connecticut. The utility company is responsible for maintaining the power grid and delivering electricity to its customers. This service represents the regulated section of the electric bill and shows up as the delivery or distribution charge. A customer will not be able to switch to another utility company for delivery services. If you experience a power outage, then you will need to contact the utility company.

United Illuminating Standard Service Rate

Thanks to legislation Connecticut adopted in 1998, known as PA 98-28, the utility companies no longer have a monopoly over the generation or supply services. However, the act requires United Illuminating to provide a standard service rate for supply services to customers that decide not to switch over to an alternate electric supplier. The standard service rate, often referred to as the price to compare, changes twice per year. The price to compare can be used by customers while shopping for a new energy supplier. If an energy supplier is offering a supply rate that is lower than the price to compare, then the customer will be saving money by switching.

United Illuminating Billing Methods

The most common billing method in deregulated electricity markets is single billing. This means if you change energy providers you will still receive one electric bill from the utility company that incorporates both the delivery and supply charges. United Illuminating offers customers additional billing services to make your life easier.

Enroll in eBill

Enrolling with United Illuminating’s eBill will make paying the electric bill even easier! With eBill, you can review up to 13 months of past energy bills online. Get rid of having to deal with paper bills that can easily be misplaced or lost in the mail. Receive notification through email when a new bill is ready. When you sign up with autopay, you will never have to worry about missing a payment again.

Budget Billing

Help manage cost when you qualify for budget billing. With budget billing, the customer will receive an average monthly electric bill based on the actual annual usage. This will help manage payments by knowing exactly how much will be charged each month. The budget billing summary helps the customer keep track of billing payment versus actual usage. The last month of the budget year-end is known as the true-up month. Periodic adjustments are made throughout the year to help avoid a large balance or credit at the end of the 12-month cycle. Customers can sign up for free if they don’t have a past due balance on the account.

Understanding the Electric Bill

If you’re shopping for a new energy supplier, then you will need to understand the two sections that make up the electric bill. The bill is split up between the delivery charge and the supply charge.

  • Delivery Charge – The delivery charge represents the regulated section of the electric bill and is charged by United Illuminating. This represents the costs of delivering the power to its customers. A customer will not be able to switch utility companies.
  • Supply Charge – The supply charge represents the deregulation section of the electric bill. This is the cost of generating the power the customer is estimated to use during a period. Deregulated electricity markets allow the customers to shop for a lower supply rate.

Energy suppliers will require information from the electric bill before you can switch. Besides the basic information such as service and billing address, the energy suppliers will also require the UI POD ID number and customer name key.
