United Illuminating Rates for 2021

United Illuminating rates change twice per year. As required by Connecticut Public Utilities Regulatory Authority (PURA), United Illuminating is responsible for providing supply services to those who do not switch over to a retail energy provider. In Connecticut, the service is known as the basic service charge or price to compare. The last change occurred on January 1, 2021.

United Illuminating

The United Illuminating electric bill has two main charges that include the delivery and supply charges. If you change electric suppliers, you will still receive one electric bill from the utility company that incorporates both charges. This method of billing is known as single billing. This saves the customer the headache of having to pay two separate energy bills.

  • Delivery Charge – The delivery charge represents the regulated section of the electric bill. This is the cost of delivering power to its customers. Connecticut residents living in the United Illuminating service area will not be able to change to another utility company for their delivery services.
  • Supply Charge – The supply charge represents the deregulated section of the electric bill and is the cost of generating the power the customer is estimated to use during a period. The utility company will provide customers a basic service charge to those who do not select a competing energy supplier.

Residential Rates

United Illuminating offers customers two rates for residential services:

  • Rate RT – This rate class is for residential customers and represents the time-of-day rate. The time-of-day rate is based on off-peak and on-peak hours. On-peak hours is the time when energy usage is at its highest. On-peak is defined between 12 p.m. to 8 p.m. during the weekdays. All other times are off-peak hours.
  • Rate R – This rate class for residential customers is defined by a fixed-rate that does not change regardless of when the energy is used. The rate is adjusted twice a year.

The basic service charge or price to compare makes it easy for customers to shop for energy suppliers. If the supply rate offered by the electric supplier is lower than the United Illuminating rates, then the customer will be saving money by switching to the new electric supplier. To provide energy services in Connecticut, an electric supplier must be licensed by the Public Utility Regulatory Authority (PURA). A full list of licensed energy providers can be viewed on PURA’s website.
